A design system does not need hundreds of components. For a small organisation, its job is to make common decisions repeatable and protect recognisability across real materials.
Begin with the repeated decisions
- Primary and compact logo arrangements
- A restrained colour palette with contrast guidance
- Display, body and utility typography
- Spacing and layout rules
- Button, form and card patterns
- Photography or illustration direction
Document use, not only appearance
A colour value is not enough. Explain when it should be used, what can sit on top of it and which combinations should be avoided. The same principle applies to logos, type sizes and imagery.
Build around actual outputs
If the team regularly creates proposals, social posts and case studies, those are the templates worth designing first. A theoretical system that ignores daily work will not stay consistent.
Allow controlled variation
Consistency is not identical repetition. Define which elements remain stable—such as typography and logo placement—and where campaigns or content can introduce variety.
